WATERFORD, IRELAND — Bausch & Lomb, the global eye health company, has named Colum Honan as general manager, Bausch & Lomb Ireland, with responsibility for its Waterford plant which manufactures contact lenses and other eye health products.
He was previously deputy general manager and held a number of positions in which he managed successful projects where new products were taken from design to manufacturing to market launch.
Mr. Honan, who is a native of Kilrush, Co Clare, joined Bausch & Lomb in Waterford in 1988 as a process engineer. He holds a bachelors degree in engineering from NIHE Limerick, subsequently University of Limerick, and a diploma in management.
In 1995, Mr. Honan was appointed process engineering manager, a role in which he facilitated the introduction of a number of new products and implemented a range of cost-improvement measures. Three years later, he moved to Rochester, N.Y., where Bausch & Lomb has had its headquarters since 1853, where he successfully managed the transfer of the key new PureVision® lens from the research and development stage to manufacturing.
In 1999, he was given responsibility as site leader for the industrialization of a new drug application which is now marketed as Retisert®, a fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal implant, which represents a dramatic advance in the management of chronic non-infectious uveitis affecting the posterior segment of the eye.
He replaces as general manager Frank O’Regan, who last year was named vice president, Operations, Global Vision Care. Mr. Honan continues to report to Frank O’Regan.
Welcoming the appointment, Frank O’Regan said, “Colum has a solid record of taking new products and processes from early product development phases right through to successful market launch with maximum efficiency. He takes over responsibility for the Waterford manufacturing site at a very challenging time when his management strengths will be a major asset in steering the business to a successful future.”
In his new role, Mr. Honan will be responsible for implementing a strategy to ensure that the Waterford plant fully supports Bausch & Lomb’s business plan by ensuring that the Irish manufacturing operation maintains the highest possible quality and customer service standards at a competitive cost.
