Bausch + Lomb Announces Patient Rebate Program For Crystalens®

New Initiative Adds Another Component to Crystalens National Awareness Campaign

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — Bausch + Lomb, the global eye health company, today announced another step in a national campaign to build awareness for Crystalens® and to increase patient adoption of the product. The company is launching a patient rebate program called See Better and Save to support its surgeons and patients. Patients who have the Crystalens intraocular lens (IOL) implanted between November 1, 2010, and January 31, 2011, will be eligible for up to $250 per eye rebate from Bausch + Lomb.

The rebate program is just the latest in a series of steps that Bausch + Lomb has taken to support the premium IOL channel for vision correction for aging baby boomers and active seniors. Bausch + Lomb has already launched a successful national advertising campaign for Crystalens. The print, online and television advertising features Broadway, film and TV actress Florence Henderson.

Bausch + Lomb made the official announcement of the See Better and Save program during the 2010 annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) which is underway in Chicago.

Crystalens is the only FDA-approved accommodating intraocular lens. Unlike the standard cataract replacement lenses, Crystalens is designed to not only eliminate the patient's cataract but also to give patients a more natural range of vision.

"The Crystalens has changed the field of vision correction. The See Better and Save program is another step in our effort to bring quality vision correction to the dynamic market of baby boomers and aging seniors. In addition to giving patients a way to correct their cataracts and to have a more natural range of vision, we are also making the surgery more accessible," said Robert E. Grant, CEO and president, Bausch + Lomb Surgical.

Ms. Henderson, who is currently working with Bausch + Lomb, recently had cataract surgery with the Crystalens. Ms. Henderson is best known for her role as Carol Brady in the iconic television series The Brady Bunch, which ran on network television from 1969 to 1974 and continues in syndication today. She has had a storied entertainment career that has spanned five decades and enjoys her recent success as a contestant on the popular ABC-TV series, Dancing with the Stars.

"My recent success on Dancing with the Stars is an example to people over 50 that they can live an active lifestyle. Since my surgery, I have been able to see much better. I even think having the Crystalens might have helped my dancing," said Ms. Henderson.

"I'm very pleased to be working with Bausch + Lomb. When something works for me like Crystalens has, I like to share my experience. I am happy when telling my story helps empower, inspire and motivate people to take care of themselves. It is important for people over 50 to understand what a cataract is and what they can do about it," she added.

Approximately three million cataract surgeries are performed in the U.S. every year. A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens in the eye. When one forms, the natural lens in the patient's eye is surgically replaced by an intraocular lens. Research indicates that only a small fraction of people realize that not all intraocular lenses are the same. The research also indicates that a number of patients are willing to pay extra money in order to get the best quality vision.

Bausch + Lomb also recently launched a web site to educate the estimated 20 million aging baby boomers and seniors who are currently living with cataracts in the U.S. The web site, www.cataracteducation.com, informs visitors about what causes cataracts, describes how they are treated and emphasizes the importance of visiting your eye doctor regularly.
