Surgery For Retinal Detachement

What Is Retinal Detachment Surgery?

There are three main surgical options to fix retinal detachment. The optimal choice varies, depending on the type and severity of the detachment. Bausch & Lomb produces innovative surgical products used for each of these procedures.

How Do The Procedures Work?

  • Pneumatic retinopexy uses a gas bubble to push the retinal tear against the back wall of the eye, where it can heal.
  • Scleral buckle uses a flexible band to pull the retina to the back wall of the eye; the doctor often drains off the fluid that is trapped under the retina.
  • Vitrectomy involves removing the vitreous gel and replacing it with a gas bubble, which the body's fluids will gradually replace.

Will It Correct My Vision?

Although these treatments often do not return vision to normal, they generally prevent continued deterioration. After surgery you should visit your ophthalmologist to determine whether you need a new prescription for vision correction.
