Surgery For Diabetic Retinopathy
What Is Diabetic Retinopathy Surgery?
Diabetic retinopathy surgery repairs the damage caused by diabetic retinopathy and is intended to slow further disease progression.
How Does It Work?
There are two main types of treatment. You eye doctor will determine which
is appropriate, based on the type of retinopathy you have and your general
health and eye structure.
Laser photocoagulation directs short bursts of laser light at the retina
to seal leaking blood vessels. Laser beams may also be used to reduce abnormal
vessel growth and seal the retina to the back of the eye.
Vitrectomy, used on more advanced cases, replaces the blood-filled
vitreous with a clear solution that allows light to pass through to the
retina.
Bausch & Lomb makes a range of innovative surgical products that are used
for these and other surgical procedures.
Will Surgery Help My Vision?
Laser surgery may alleviate the problems caused by diabetic retinopathy, although it is often necessary to have more than one procedure.
