Bausch + Lomb Unveils New Line of Storz™ CapsuleGuard® IA Handpieces at 2012 ASCRS

Extended, Single-Use CapsuleGuard Line Offers Broader Range of Surgical Applications

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — Bausch + Lomb, the global eye health company, unveiled the latest innovation to its industry-leading Storz™ Ophthalmic Instruments line at this year’s American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) conference in Chicago, Illinois. The silicone CapsuleGuard® IA line has expanded from two to ten single-use instruments, offering cataract surgeons a wider range of options for both incisions and techniques for irrigation and aspiration.

“The CapsuleGuard has been a game-changer for me in the art of removing cortical material; there is no doubt that, at times, it is more arduous to remove cortex than the nucleus especially with tougher cataracts, smaller pupils, and flimsy posterior capsules,” says Dr. Jai G. Parekh, MD, MBA, FAAO, clinical associate professor of ophthalmology, The New York Eye & Ear Infirmary/
New York Medical College, NY, and managing partner, Brar-Parekh Eye Associates, NJ. “Ever since implementing the CapsuleGuard as part of my standard surgical regimen, I feel safer in going after the cortex in all my cases. Its silicone and disposable nature are attributes that I have come to enjoy. Safety and dependability is something we all yearn for and the CapsuleGuard does just that.”

The new, expanded CapsuleGuard line now offers surgeons the smaller, MICS 1.8 incision option in addition to the standard 2.2 to 2.8 incision ranges. The single-use, silicone instruments also have three new tip designs, allowing surgeons a wider array of techniques for irrigation and aspiration. The line is compatible with Bausch + Lomb’s Stellaris® PC Vision Enhancement System as well as other ophthalmic surgical platforms.

“Our customers and the patients they serve are at the center of every development we bring to market,” says Cal Roberts, M.D., executive vice president and chief medical officer, Bausch + Lomb. “This new offering in our signature Storz line was based on direct feedback from the industry’s surgeons who told us they wanted more choices to better treat their cataract surgery patients – and we’ve delivered.”

Bausch + Lomb launched the Storz CapsuleGuard IA line of instruments in 2010. The line boasts:

1. A smooth silicone exterior surface without exposed metal;
2. A flexible tip for use in the removal of peripheral and sub-incisional cortical material and capsule polishing;
3. A soft aspiration port which allows for capsule vacuuming for lens epithelial cell removal.

The CapsuleGuard line is ideal for lens positioning and post implant viscoelastic removal.

Bausch + Lomb’s Storz CapsuleGuard IA line is available in the United States, Canada, Europe, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia and India.
