Bausch + Lomb Announces Platinum Sponsorship of the International Keratoconus Academy

Sponsorship Supports Education, Awareness and Treatment of Keratoconus and Related Forms of Corneal Disease

FOR RELEASE WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15, 2016

BRIDGEWATER, NJ – Bausch + Lomb, a leading global eye health company, today announced that its Specialty Vision Products business has renewed its platinum sponsorship of the International Keratoconus Academy for the second consecutive year. The organization, established in late 2014, promotes ongoing professional education and scientific development in the area of keratoconus and other forms of corneal ectasia. Bausch + Lomb Specialty Vision Products’ platinum sponsorship will continue to support these efforts, as part of its commitment to help meet the needs of patients with these challenging visual conditions.

“The International Keratoconus Academy is pleased to recognize Bausch + Lomb Specialty Vision Products as a platinum sponsor for the second consecutive year,” said Dr. Barry Eiden, president and co-founder.  “As an organization dedicated to the education and advancement of treatment options for keratoconus, we genuinely appreciate the commitment and support that Bausch + Lomb Specialty Vision Products is providing practitioners and their patients with severe ocular conditions through this sponsorship.”

Keratoconus occurs when the normally round cornea (the front part of the eye) becomes thin and irregular (cone) shaped. This abnormal shape prevents the light entering the eye from being focused correctly on the retina, causing vision distortion. Progression of the disease leads to misshaping and gradual thinning of the cornea, causing irregular astigmatism and corneal scarring, which may ultimately necessitate corneal transplantation.

Bausch + Lomb Specialty Vision Products is committed to furthering education and support, while fulfilling the growing needs of the GP market by providing ECPs finished contact lenses for serious optical conditions such as keratoconus, Pellucid Marginal Degeneration (PMD), post-refractive surgery, and certain ocular surface diseases. Throughout the year, the business will be sponsoring numerous webinars and training sessions for expert specialty lens fitters, educating them on lens options for patients with these conditions.

“Our platinum sponsorship of the International Keratoconus Academy is just one example of our commitment to providing education and training to ECPs and the patients they serve,” said David Bland, director, Specialty Vision Products, Bausch + Lomb. Through these continued sponsorships, we will be able to bring more specialty lenses to more patients, and ensure that together, we are doing our best to help the eye care community provide quality education and training in keratoconus care.”
