Free iPhone App Helps Educate and Entertain Consumers About Vision
ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — Bausch + Lomb, the global eye health company, announced today that it is offering a free iPhone application, called Crystalens® iClear, that will educate and entertain consumers about vision, cataracts and the B+LCrystalens product.
Crystalens is the only FDA-approved accommodating intraocular lens. Unlike the standard cataract replacement lenses, the Crystalens intraocular lens is designed to not only eliminate the patient's cataract but also to give patients a more natural range of vision.
The Crystalens iClear iPhone app will help users learn more about cataracts. In addition, they will be able to self-check their visual acuity and color vision and have some fun with the Crystalens iClear “Picture Hunt.” The user will also be able to find a Crystalens surgeon by using "doc finder" on the application. The iPhone app is free and is available in iPhone App Stores.
Offering the Crystalens iClear iPhone app is just the latest step the company has taken to help Crystalens surgeons and their patients understand the importance of vision correction for the aging baby boomer and active seniors. Bausch + Lomb has already launched a national advertising campaign for Crystalens. The print, online and television advertising forCrystalens features Broadway film and TV actress Florence Henderson. Bausch + Lomb also recently announced a $250 per lens patient rebate program for patients who have the Crystalens implanted before March 31, 2011.
"As more and more people of all ages become more dependent on their mobile phones for information, we thought it made sense to develop the CrystalensiClear iPhone app that could both be fun and help educate consumers about cataracts and vision. This is another step Bausch + Lomb has taken in promoting the Crystalens to consumers so that they can learn both about their vision and some options to improve their eyesight," said Amy Jacobs, director, Global Marketing for Crystalens.
Approximately three million cataract surgeries are performed in the U.S. every year. A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens in the eye. During surgery the clouded natural lens in the patient's eye is replaced by an intraocular lens. Research indicates that only a small fraction of people realize that not all intraocular lenses are the same. The research also indicates that a number of patients are willing to pay a little extra money in order to get the best quality vision.
Bausch + Lomb also recently launched a web site to educate the estimated 20 million aging baby boomers and seniors who are currently living with cataracts in the U.S. The web site, www.cataracteducation.com, informs visitors about what causes cataracts, describes how they are treated and emphasizes the importance of visiting your eye doctor regularly.
