Study Presented at British Contact Lens Association Clinical Conference and Exhibition
Rochester, NY – Biotrue™ multi-purpose solution, made by Bausch + Lomb, keeps lenses moist for up to 20 hours, according to data presented at the 35th British Contact Lens Association Clinical Conference and Exhibition.1 The new wettability study provides insight into a solution for the common complaint of dryness among contact lens users.
Wettability or the degree to which a contact lens maintains moisture on the surface of the lens is partially dependent upon the retention of wetting agents, or surfactants, within the multi-purpose solution. The in vitro study examined the wetting agent retention of Biotrue versus four leading multi-purpose solutions, as well as a saline control in three types of silicone hydrogel lenses.1
Results showed that Biotrue provided a significant wettability benefit, with 20 hours of continuous wetting agent release in silicone hydrogel lenses. In the other multi-purpose solutions tested, wetting agents were undetectable at eight hours or less.
Dryness symptoms have been found to be a prevalent issue among contact lens wearers. In fact, results from the Needs, Symptoms, Incidence, Global Eye Health Trends (NSIGHT) study, a global assessment of the hierarchy of vision-corrected patient needs, revealed that more than 50 percent (52%) of contact lens wearers in the United States claim to suffer from dry eye symptoms, with nearly 60 percent (56%) of these reporting dryness symptoms at least three times each week.2
“Biotrue contains a unique combination of surfactants and a natural lubricant called hyaluronan or HA,” said Mohinder Merchea, OD, PhD, MBA, director, Medical Affairs, North America Vision Care, Bausch + Lomb. “These surface active agents work with HA to provide lens surface moisture for up to 20 hours, helping to provide all day comfort to lens wearers. Overwhelmingly, both patients and eye care professionals have expressed their satisfaction with Biotrue.”
Bio-inspired Biotrue, incorporates HA in a formulation that matches the pH of healthy tears and keeps certain beneficial tear proteins active. The combination of surfactants and HA form a network on the lens surface to attract moisture. This proprietary formulation enables moisture to spread easily over the surface of the lens and envelops the lens in a moisture rich cushion to combat the common dryness symptoms experienced by many contact lens wearers. In fact, in a study of nearly 400 patients in the US who had tried Biotrue, 90 percent rated overall comfort from good to excellent. Seventy percent of those experiencing dry eye symptoms on a regular basis agreed that Biotrue is better than their usual solution for preventing their contact lenses from drying out.3
Patients should consult their eye care professional to determine which multi-purpose solution is best for them.

Wetting Agent Retention and Release From Hydrogel and Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lenses. Poster Session Presented at the 35th British Contact Lens Association Clinical Conference and Exhibition; May 26-29; Manchester Central, UK.
Study Design: Results of in vitro study performed to evaluate the release of wetting agents from various silicone hydrogel lens materials (balafilcon A, senofilcon A, and lotrafilcon B) over a 20-hour time period. Lenses were placed in Bausch + Lomb standard lens cases (or hydrogen peroxide neutralizing cases) and soaked for 8 hours in respective lens care solutions. Hank’s balanced salt solution (HBSS) was dripped over the lenses at a rate that approximates tear secretion in the human eye as determined by Reddy I, et al. Ocular Therapeutics and Drug Delivery. The solution that rinsed off the lenses was collected at set time periods over 20 hours and the surface tension was measured using tensiometry. The surface tension of the rinse solution collected was then analyzed versus the surface tension of the control (HBSS) using a t-test at a p-value of <0.05
2 The Needs, Symptoms, Incidence, Global Eye Health Trends (NSIGHT) study surveyed 3,800 spectacle- and contact lens-corrected subjects, 15 to 65 years of age, from seven different countries (China, Korea, Japan, France, Italy, United Kingdom, United States, with 1,000 specifically in the US
3 Results from a branded survey questionnaire in in which 389 users (enrolled by 20 eye care practitioners) of various multi-purpose solutions including: OPTI-FREE, Clear Care and renu products, used Biotrue multi-purpose solution for two weeks and reported their experiences.
