Former Executive Director, Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs Vision Center of Excellence, Joins Bausch + Lomb
Donald Gagliano, M.D., Appointed Vice President, Global Development Operations
ROCHESTER, NY — Bausch + Lomb, the global eye health company, today announced that Colonel Donald Gagliano, M.D., has joined the company as vice president, global development operations. Dr. Gagliano will lead the scientific review of global business development opportunities and strategic initiatives for the company’s Pharmaceuticals business, as well as support special projects in its Surgical business.
“Dr. Gagliano brings to Bausch + Lomb a long record of distinctive accomplishment in the global eye health community,” said Dan Wechsler, executive vice president and president, Bausch + Lomb Global Pharmaceuticals. “He will play a leading role as we continue to develop and deliver innovative solutions to physicians and their patients in markets around the world.”
A retinal ophthalmologist and a fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives, Dr. Gagliano has served since 2008 as executive director, Department of Defense (DoD)/Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Vision Center of Excellence (VCE), in Bethesda, Maryland. He established and led this Congressionally-mandated center of excellence to be the nation’s leader in the prevention, clinical care, research, education, advocacy and information management for military eye injuries and diseases and vision disorders with traumatic brain injury across the DoD and VA continuum. In February 2013, the VCE was recognized by the Foundation for Fighting Blindness with the 2013 Innovators Award.
In a prior appointment, Dr. Gagliano served as director of the clinical investigations regulatory office in the army medical research and materiel command. He directed a designated federal laboratory responsible for regulatory oversight and compliance of the army clinical investigation program and clinical collaborative research and development agreements. Earlier, Dr Gagliano served as chairman of the medical education and training campus executive committee, U.S. army medical department center and school in San Antonio.
Over a military career spanning more than 30 years, Dr. Gagliano has led soldiers at every level of command, including the 30th medical brigade in Iraq from February 2003 until February 2004. Under his command, the 30th medical brigade was awarded the meritorious unit citation for exemplary performance. Since 1998, he has served as a clinical adjunct professor of surgery, Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, in Bethesda, Maryland.
