Akreos™ AO Micro Incision Intraocular Lens Receives Prestigious Honor
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Bausch & Lomb today announced that its Akreos AO Micro Incision Intraocular Lens (Akreos MI60) has won a 2008 Medical Design Excellence Award (MDEA), the premier awards program for the medical technology community.
In keeping with Bausch & Lomb’s drive for smaller cataract incisions and ever better patient outcomes, the innovative Akreos MI60 intraocular lens was designed specifically for implantation through a 1.8-mm incision. It can be inserted through a micro incision due to its incredibly strong yet flexible acrylic base material: a unique acrylic material that has a ten year history of performance and successful implantation in more than two million eyes worldwide.
“With the Akreos MI60 intraocular lens and the new Stellaris® Vision Enhancement System, accommodating both 1.8 mm coaxial and biaxial techniques, Bausch & Lomb is the only company today that can offer such a complete solution for micro incision cataract surgery” said Dr. Joel Pynson, director - design engineering who led the Akreos MI60 project team.
“As part of our innovative, industry-leading lens portfolio the Akreos MI60 provides surgeons with options that deliver the outcomes their patients demand,” said Alan Farnsworth, corporate vice president and president, Europe, Middle East and Africa region.
The Akreos MI60 is available in Europe and Asia. It is not yet approved for use in the United States. Please visit www.micsplatform.com for more information.
