Bausch & Lomb Confirms Plans for Contact Lens Manufacturing Consolidation

LIVINGSTON, SCOTLAND -- Bausch & Lomb today confirmed its plans to withdraw from contact lens manufacturing at its Livingston, Scotland, facility, with anticipated closure in 2011. The initial 90-day consultation period has come to a close, with the company and the site’s work force having agreed to redundancy terms.

Over the course of the phased withdrawal -- which was proposed in September 2009 -- contact lens manufacturing will be consolidated at existing plants in Waterford, Ireland, and Rochester, N.Y., United States.

“Throughout this process, our employees, government officials, and government agencies in Scotland have conducted themselves with understanding, concern and support for those affected, and with utmost professionalism, for which we thank them,” said Gerald M. Ostrov, chairman and chief executive officer, Bausch & Lomb. “Our Livingston work force is dedicated, passionate, and highly skilled, and we’re undertaking multiple efforts to help them find new employment opportunities over the coming months.”

As it committed to earlier this year, the company intends to voluntarily return its most recent Regional Selective Assistance (RSA) grant -- approximately 1 million GBP -- to the Scottish government.

During the manufacturing transition, the company is taking multiple measures to ensure uninterrupted supplies of all products to eye care professionals and consumers.
